The Team

Four impassioned master students based in Manchester,England.

EMMA HARCKHAM is the founder of Beyond the Wall Festival! Originally from New York, but has been living across the UK for the past 6 years. While getting her MFA in Filmmaking at Manchester School of Art, she realized that over the years she had met so many interesting Americans living abroad, and wanted to explore their perspective as it’s reflected on film. She is excited to show films that are political, fun, diverse, and fresh to modern audiences, and feels so lucky to be working with our amazing team

INTERESTING FACT: She was an extra in The Amazing Spiderman 2 (the one with Andrew Garfield) and can be spotted in a wide shot of the graduation scene in a blue cap and gown for all of .2 seconds!

REBECCA PATTERSON is originally from the North East of England, a stones throw away from Newcastle the home of Brown Ale, Greggs and Get Carter (1969). She study Filmmaking at Manchester School of Art and being part of Beyond the Wall festival is a dream for her as she lives and breathes cinema. Especially cinema that strives to make a difference, which is the main motivation behind the festival.

INTERESTING FACT: Her father was once an extra in a Mike Leigh film and had the line ‘alright mate.’

RICHARD EVANS has had quite a varied career. He co-launched Hammerhead TV Facilities North in Manchester (now ProCam) and
later embarked on a career within the Camera Department for the film & TV industry. His experience spans over sixteen years and has worked on many productions; from BAFTA nominated documentaries to critically acclaimed feature films. But the offer of a decent pension and children brought about another change of direction; he now works at a film school teaching on a BA (Hons) film course. He also currently studies on the MA Filmmaking course at Manchester Metropolitan University and working towards making his own short film entitled, Against the Grain - a story of life & wood. He became involved in this project as the number one question is ‘How to get people to watch my film?’ Beyond the Wall film festival seeks to promote films from around the world and provide that vital connection between filmmaker and audience, so that their stories may be told.

TAYLOR OLSON like Emma, is a fellow American from a small town in Washington State called Walla Walla. Having heard of this project she knew she had to participate in it! Blending together film and politics with a diverse and new perspective sounded too fun to pass up. Studying for a MFA in Graphic Design & Art Direction at Manchester School of Art and feels so lucky to be in such a beautiful, lively city, having the opportunity to work on a passion project like this is making her experience in Manchester even more meaningful.

INTERESTING FACT: She was obsessed with Wizard of Oz as a child and would embarrass her mother by telling strangers her name was Dorothy. She credits her obsession for Wizard of Oz to her love of film and cinema.
